Towel GSM Guide
Over 25 Years of Towel Manufacturing Experience
We have been manufacturing and supplying towels to hotels, gyms, businesses and domestic customers for over 25 years, ranging from budget 320gsm towels through to luxury 750gsm towels and from face cloths measuring 30cm x 30cm right up to jumbo bath sheets measuring 180cm x 200cm.
What Does GSM Mean?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Metre and is the standard measurement used throughout the textile industry to indicate the weight of a fabric.
While many customers will see terms such as 320gsm, 400gsm or 650gsm when shopping for towels, not everyone understands what GSM actually means or how it affects the feel, weight and performance of a towel.
As a general rule:
-
Lower GSM = lighter towel
-
Higher GSM = heavier towel
-
Higher GSM does not always mean better
-
The ideal GSM depends on the intended use of the towel
How Is GSM Calculated?
GSM is calculated using the actual weight and dimensions of the finished towel.
Formula:
GSM = (Weight in grams ÷ Length in cm ÷ Width in cm) × 10,000
Example
A bath towel measuring 70cm x 140cm with an actual weight of 392 grams:
GSM = (392 ÷ 70 ÷ 140) × 10,000
GSM = 400
This means the towel has a fabric weight of 400 grams per square metre (400gsm).
Because GSM is based on both weight and size, a larger towel will naturally weigh more than a smaller towel with the same GSM. For example, a 400gsm bath sheet will weigh considerably more than a 400gsm hand towel, even though the fabric weight is identical.

Which GSM Is Best?
There is no single "best" GSM.
The correct GSM depends entirely on how the towel will be used.
If value and practicality are the priority, a 320gsm or 400gsm towel may be the best choice.
If comfort and luxury are more important, a 650gsm to 750gsm towel may be more suitable.
Our Recommendation
For most customers, a towel between 400gsm and 500gsm offers the best balance of:
-
Absorbency
-
Durability
-
Drying performance
-
Value for money
Common Misconceptions About GSM
A common misconception is that a heavier towel is automatically a better towel.
In reality, GSM is only one factor.
The quality of the cotton, manufacturing process, construction and intended use of the towel are equally important considerations.
A well-made 400gsm towel can often be a better choice than a poorly manufactured 600gsm towel.
Final Thoughts
After more than 25 years of manufacturing and supplying towels, one thing remains true:
The best towel is not necessarily the heaviest towel.
The right towel is the one that is suitable for its intended purpose.
Understanding GSM makes it easier to choose a towel that matches your requirements, whether that is a budget hand towel, a gym towel, a hotel towel or a luxury bath sheet.
